Bolivia: Uyuni, Volcano Uturuncu, and Huayna Potosí

You are here:

This country will amaze even those who have traveled a lot. Trekking to the salt flats, lagoons, volcanoes and Lake Titicaca.

With ascent of the 6088 m high Huayna Potosí.

Bolivia is one of the most varied and adventurous countries in South America. A trip across the barren Altiplano to the Uyuni salt lake and into the wild southwest of Bolivia is one of the special and unusual travel experiences in South America. Few of the roads are paved. Across the salt lake, one often only orientates oneself according to the horizon. Thousands of flamingos cavort in the lagoons.

Another highlight is trekking to the 6008 meter high Uturuncu volcano. Climbing a six-thousander usually requires technical skills with rope and ice ax and is therefore reserved for mountaineers. Not so with this trek. Every healthy participant with a good physical condition can hike to the summit at a leisurely pace and fulfill their dream of a six-thousander. After a ten-day round trip in the high altitudes of Bolivia, everyone is well acclimatized and equipped for the ascent.
The areas around Lake Titicaca are characterized by culture and tradition and are also among the most impressive areas of Bolivia.

Behind Lake Titicaca lies a fantastic trekking area with the Cordillera Real. We trek daily between the volcanoes, on the sunny island in Lake Titicaca or in the Cordillera Real in an impressive Andean mountain landscape. For mountaineers with the appropriate experience, the ascent of the 6088 m high Huayna Potosí is optionally possible at the end of the trip.

Travel Program

Flight from Zurich to Santa Cruz de la Sierra.

We arrive in the subtropical city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra in the afternoon. The city is also the largest city in Bolivia. Colonial architectural style and modernity alternate. Transfer to the hotel and relax. During a stroll through the city we can take in first impressions of this city.
Overnight at hotel.

In the morning we fly from Santa Cruz to Sucre in about an hour. Sucre is considered the colonial jewel of Bolivia. We visit the “White City”, which has been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
Overnight at hotel.

Today we come to Potosí; the air is already getting thin at 4000 m. Visiting the silver mines and the colonial town are impressive experiences. Both have been declared World Heritage Sites by Unesco. This day helps again to get used to the altitude.
Accommodation in the hotel.

The bus now takes us through a wild, sparsely populated landscape. We will see hundreds of llamas on the impressive drive to Uyuni. On the way to Uyuni we visit the village of Pulacayo with its mine. The Pulacayo mine was the second largest silver mine in Bolivia in the 18th century, it was dug to a depth of up to 1000 meters. We visit the village, which is reminiscent of a Wild West film, and then enjoy the onward journey across the barren Altiplano.
Overnight stay in a hotel.

With our 4 x 4 we start to the big salt desert. On the way we visit a small salt industry before going on the long drive (100 km) across the salt lake. We try to orient ourselves on the horizon so that we can reach the volcanic island in the middle of the lake. We take a short hike on the impressive island covered with cacti. After a picnic on the island, we drive, again oriented towards the horizon, across the snow-white salt lake to the Tunupa volcano.
Overnight at the salt hotel at the foot of Tunupa.

In the early morning we take a hike at the foot of the Tunupa volcano. The unique view of the largest salt lake in the world (approx. 12,000 km²) is overwhelming. In this deserted region we feel like we are at the end of the world! Approx. 3 – 5 hours hike. Depending on the condition of the group and the altitude adjustment, it is possible to climb up to 4900 m here.
Overnight at the salt hotel at the foot of Tunupa.

We drive 80 km across the Salt Lake, after that we cross the Chiguana Desert and arrive at the Route of the Volcanoes, where we can even see the smoke of Volcán Ollagüe. Our easy hike takes us through lagoons where countless flamingos cavort in their pink dress. Arrived on the high plateau of the Siloli desert, a spectacular view of the Andean volcanoes presents itself. Fantastic if we can watch the sky and sun change color in the evening from the hotel. This is followed by a breathtaking starry sky in the middle of the desert.
Overnight at hotel.

Another highlight is ahead of us! It’s worth getting an early start, as the morning light transforms Avaroa National Park into a fairytale landscape. Dazzling shades of color at the Laguna Colorada, thousands of flamingos and a unique volcanic landscape combine to form a picture of superlatives. The geysers at 4800 m form a contrast, from where we undertake a short hike to Laguna Chalviri. Hot water pools spontaneously invite you to take a dip. Along the picturesque Quetena Canyon we reach Quetena Chico.
Overnight in a simple Andean hotel.

Today we climb a 6000er! With the all-terrain vehicles we first go to the Lipes Mountain Range with the volcanoes and lagoons, then we continue up to 5400 m. The technically simple 6008 m high Uturuncu is actually possible for all trekkers, because we are well acclimatized. Additional local guides accompany us for the ascent, so that no one is alone if they have to turn back early. We climb the 600 meters in altitude to the summit at a leisurely pace in 4 hours. The view is indescribable, we are on top of Uturuncu. For the descent we need another 2 hours. In the afternoon we are back in Quetena Chico and celebrate our summit success.
Overnight in a simple Andean hotel.

Early in the morning we drive back across the impressive plateau via San Cristóbal to Uyuni. On the way we can see the shy vicunas or the Andean ostrich. Just before Uyuni we visit the spooky train cemetery, a sign of another glorious era. Now we fly to La Paz and land at 4000 m.
Overnight in the hotel.

The Cordillera Real stretches along the eastern shore of Lake Titicaca. That’s where we want to go. After a short drive we start at 4300 m for today’s trekking; it will be a varied day. In about 3 hours we slowly climb up to 4600 m, past the deep blue lagoons. The glaciers of the 5648 m high Tuni Condoriri shine in the background. Again and again we encounter llamas and alpacas as well as viscachas, the rabbit-like rodents. For the descent we need about 2 hours. We continue by car along Lake Titicaca. We will have lunch in a local restaurant before marveling at the vastness of Lake Titicaca from a beautiful vantage point.
Overnight stay in a hotel beautifully situated on Lake Tititcaca.

Today we experience a boat trip along the Cordillera Real and Lake Titicaca. We drive up to the Lourdes Caves and will embark on a 3 hour trek through the beautiful countryside of Sampaya. From there it’s another short trip by boat and on foot to Yumani.
Overnight at hotel.

We walk to the port and continue by boat back to Copacabana. We drive to La Paz and take the time to visit the colorful indigenous markets or the various buildings and churches from the colonial era. La Paz is a city of contrasts. The center of the highest metropolis in the world is 3650 m above sea level. M.
Guests who have booked the 6088 m high Huayna Potosí climb up to the refuge at 5200 m in about 3 hours in the afternoon.

We leave at 1:30 a.m. After a good 3 hours we reach the shoulder of Huayna Potosí. After another 3 hours we reach the highest point. We are at 6088 m above sea level. M. summit of the Huayna Potosí. The impressive panorama extends over Lake Titicaca to La Paz and the 6439 m high Nevado Illimani. We descend to high camp and drive back to La Paz.
Overnight in hotel.

Only about 10 km from the city center is the Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley), which offers pretty photo opportunities with its bizarre erosion formations. Afterwards we hike in about 2 to 3 hours through the Palca Canyon. Photographers will get their money’s worth again today, such a natural wonder simply has to be captured in pictures. In front of us the 6439 m high Illimani rises majestically with its white glaciers – what a contrast!
Overnight at hotel.

Today everyone can organize the day according to their own wishes. La Paz has a lot to offer. Colonial La Paz with palaces and churches or the local markets. Soar over the city in a gondola: three different gondola lines offer a fantastic bird’s-eye view. In the afternoon we take a short flight back to our starting point of the trek in Santa Cruz. Now a wonderful journey comes to an end and we enjoy our final dinner in a traditional restaurant in Santa Cruz. In tropical warmth we let the contrasting trip to Bolivia come to an end.
