- Peru: Ski Expedition Nevado Mateo, Vallunaraju, Pi…
One of the best options for Ski-Tour Mountaineering expeditions trip in the Cordillera Blanca
The northern half of South America is a wild land of extremes from 4000 miles up. The Amazon, and its jungle and tributaries, is the dominant feature. Mountain lovers will immediately notice the less green and more jagged landscape rimming the continent on the west. From a thousand miles up the landscape is largely brown and dry. However, scrolling up and down the Andes from the exosphere, blotches of snow and ice are apparent, impossibly close to the equator, there in the middle of Peru.
Climbing for turns, with the entire surrounding region otherwise occupied. To the east is the Amazon rainforest and to the west along Peru’s arid coast, the scene and terrain is anything but alpine.
Climbing for turns, with the entire surrounding region otherwise occupied. To the east is the Amazon rainforest and to the west along Peru’s arid coast, the scene and terrain is anything but alpine.
The Cordillera Blanca stands out as an island of alpinism in a giant sea of jungle, desert, and agriculture. This alone makes skiing in Peru special. One can be quite confident that no one for thousands of miles is doing what you are doing. Maybe they are the smart ones, but you, at that moment at least, are the special one.
Peru to climb mountains and ski back down them. It seems that a handful of the thousands of visiting climbers each year bring skis to the Cordillera Blanca. I think that ratio should change. In a sort of exploratory bid, we camped high, ‘epic-ed’ a little, scored a first known descent, and enjoyed an amazing run on a classic slogging climb.
Nevado Mateo 5,150 m: Nevado Mateo is the fifth peak of the Contrahierbas Massif, located in the Cordillera Blanca, belonging to the Peruvian Andes. The climb to the summit is easy to access and short, good for good acclimatization, we have already had clients who have gone down with Snoword and Ski but they say that the descent is too short so skiing is optional but to acclimatize it is an excellent option.
Nevado Pisco 5,752m: Nevado Pisco is a very straightforward an achievable climb, most of the way is not steep and not technical. This climb and ski provides a great experience and improves the acclimatization as preparation for the final goal Nevato Tocllaraju. The Nevado Tocllaraju is a very attractive mountain, it is one of the easiest 6 thousand within the Cordillera Blanca.
Nevados Ishinca 5560m and Nevado Tocllaraju at 6030m: A challenging expedition in the Ishinca valley that will take us to ascend the Urus (5,420 m), Ishinca (5,530 m) and Tocllaraju (6,034 m) mountains. In addition, we will walk through a beautiful valley of the Cordillera Blanca, which combines the greatest attractions that the central Andes of Peru have. However, this place is excellent for doing the sport of downhill alpine skiing and this will be our scenario and final trip within our travel program.

We drive to the village of Llupa, and from there begin our hike on an ancient Inca trail to Laguna (Lake) Churup. The trail gets narrow and steep, including a small section with fixed ropes. It‘s one of the most beautiful places in this varied mountain region. Churup Peak rises above the lake, a wild rocky mountain with glaciers and cliffs 5,400 meters above sea level. Summit Day! After a very early breakfast, we proceed over the glacier to the northwest ridge of the peak. Because the glacier changes from year to year, the technical ice climbing is also different from year to year. We might find small walls of ice, up to 60 degree surfaces. The summit ridge is secured with fixed ropes. From the 6000+ meter peak, the view opens on the entire Cordillera Blanca. This day we took the Skis to a part and after the summit we went down with them, it is not possible to Ski from the summit because the mountain has very steep parts and is exposed to danger. Our local guide will give the instructions for this day very carefully. Descend to Base Camp. At noon we return to Moraine Camp and continue to Base Camp.

What happens in the event of bad weather?
About the meteorological conditions of the climate, we try to organize the trips of each tour in the best season to have the best views and enjoy the selected trip but sometimes even is good season we can have bad weather, in this case on hiking or treks trips The complications are minimal, but when this happens during high-altitude climbing expeditions, the complications can become very difficult, that is why the bosses or leaders of the local guides must always make the most correct decision for the safety of our passengers, so we always recommend listening to the best advice from the local guide assigned for each tour. If you have any other questions please contact us. For calls or inquiries to this number: +51 943 081 066
Can I join a group?
We as a local company and connoisseurs of tours have departures on different dates. The best thing to do is to join a travel group to take care of your budget, and of course you can join our groups, but on trips like mountaineering we recommend going in small groups. To join a group, ask us for the dates and we will send you the necessary information to be able to join any of our trips.
Why go in a private trip: For trips whether trekking or high mountains, going privately is the most recommended option, but the costs are more expensive. So, if one joins a group, the prices will be more reasonable. In the mountains, the only disadvantage is if you are in a wall with another partner and if one of the participants gets tired or gets sick. In this case, you have to abort or cancel the summit and return together. For more information, contact us. We can schedule a call via WhatsApp to clarify all your questions.
In a mountain, for example, if 3 people go and one of the participants falls ill on the route, for security reasons they have to cancel or abort the summit or return all together. The same in a technical mountain if the climbing partner gets sick they all have to return, for these reasons sometimes it is better to go private only because for a single person the costs are more expensive for the same reason that the trip would already be private .
