Climbing Volcano Coropuna Tour

You are here:

Standing as the tallest volcano in Peru at an impressive 6,425 meters (21,079 ft) above sea level, Coropuna offers a true challenge for mountaineers. The ascent demands not only excellent physical condition but also experience in high-altitude mountaineering and ice climbing techniques.

3-Day Itinerary:

    • Day 1: The journey begins from Arequipa, heading towards Laguna Pallarcocha, where the first night is spent camping.
    • Day 2: The trek to base camp, located at 5,583 meters, is essential for acclimatization and resting before the summit push.
    • Day 3: The ascent starts early at 1 a.m., aiming to reach the Coropuna summit (6,425 m) by sunrise, taking advantage of optimal conditions. After enjoying the panoramic views, you descend back to base camp and return to Laguna Pallarcocha, from where you drive back to Arequipa.

Equipment and Preparation:

Specialized gear is required for ice and snow climbing, including crampons, ice axes, helmets, ropes, and appropriate clothing for extreme conditions. Experience with high-altitude environments and proper acclimatization are also essential to avoid altitude sickness.

Cultural Experience:

The region offers a unique opportunity to engage with local communities that preserve their ancestral traditions, adding significant cultural value to the adventure.

Coropuna, with its majestic glaciers and stunning landscapes, is a destination that combines extreme adventure with a deep connection to nature and Andean culture.

Travel Program

At 5 a.m., we will pick you up from your hotel in Arequipa for a private jeep ride. We will descend into the desert and then head northwest. After 3 hours, we reach the Majes Valley (600 m), our first stop, where you’ll explore the Toro Muerto Petroglyphs. In the middle of the desert, surrounded by towering canyon walls, you will have time to discover hundreds of rock carvings depicting humans, animals, and plants, created over 1,200 years ago by ancient Peruvian civilizations.
Breakfast will be in the nearby town of Corire (included). Our next stop is Qerulpa, known as the “Little Jurassic Park” of Arequipa. After a short 10-minute hike, you’ll find dinosaur footprints on the sandy hillsides, estimated to be between 100 and 150 million years old.
We continue driving through stunning arid landscapes, ascending to Chuquibamba (3,000 m), a lush valley where we’ll stop for a late lunch. By 3 p.m., we head further uphill to glimpse the first views of Coropuna’s southern face.

  • Distance: 290 km by car
  • Walking time: 1 hour
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Maximum altitude: 4,743 m
  • Accommodation: Camping at Laguna Pallarcocha

After breakfast at 7 a.m., we pack up and drive for about 40 minutes to the starting point of the Coropuna trek (5,307 m). At around 10 a.m., we begin a 2-hour uphill hike covering 1.92 km to reach the second base camp (5,583 m). This gradual ascent, considered moderate, rewards you with breathtaking views, including the Solimana Peak.
After setting up camp, you’ll have the afternoon free to explore and acclimatize further to Mount Coropuna’s imposing presence.

  • Distance: 1.92 km
  • Walking time: 2 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Maximum altitude: 5,583 m
  • Accommodation: Camping at Coropuna Base Camp

At 1 a.m., we wake up for a quick, energy-packed breakfast. After organizing our climbing gear (including crampons, ice axes, harnesses, and ropes for a 43° incline), we begin our climb in the dark, guided by headlamps. The first 4 hours are spent ascending through challenging terrain, including navigating crevasses and penitentes—sharp ice formations that require careful maneuvering.
By 5:45 a.m., the sun rises over the neighboring peaks, creating a spectacular scene. After 6–7 hours of intense climbing, we reach the summit of Coropuna, where we take time to savor the views of the surrounding Andes.
The descent can be physically demanding, taking 3–5 hours to return to base camp. After packing up, we descend further to meet the jeep for our journey back to Arequipa, arriving by late evening.

  • Distance: 3 km to the summit, 5 km back to the jeep
  • Walking time: 14 hours
  • Difficulty: Extreme

About the meteorological conditions of the climate, we try to organize the trips of each tour in the best season to have the best views and enjoy the selected trip but sometimes even is good season we can have bad weather, in this case on hiking or treks trips The complications are minimal, but when this happens during high-altitude climbing expeditions, the complications can become very difficult, that is why the bosses or leaders of the local guides must always make the most correct decision for the safety of our passengers, so we always recommend listening to the best advice from the local guide assigned for each tour. If you have any other questions please contact us. For calls or inquiries to this number: +51 943 081 066

We as a local company and connoisseurs of tours have departures on different dates. The best thing to do is to join a travel group to take care of your budget, and of course you can join our groups, but on trips like mountaineering we recommend going in small groups. To join a group, ask us for the dates and we will send you the necessary information to be able to join any of our trips.

Why go in a private trip: For trips whether trekking or high mountains, going privately is the most recommended option, but the costs are more expensive. So, if one joins a group, the prices will be more reasonable. In the mountains, the only disadvantage is if you are in a wall with another partner and if one of the participants gets tired or gets sick. In this case, you have to abort or cancel the summit and return together. For more information, contact us. We can schedule a call via WhatsApp to clarify all your questions.

In a mountain, for example, if 3 people go and one of the participants falls ill on the route, for security reasons they have to cancel or abort the summit or return all together. The same in a technical mountain if the climbing partner gets sick they all have to return, for these reasons sometimes it is better to go private only because for a single person the costs are more expensive for the same reason that the trip would already be private .
