Central Region: Notable for the Pacaya Volcano and the Agua Volcano
The Agua volcano, also known as Hunahpú by the Mayans, is an inactive volcano located between the municipality of Santa María de Jesús, Ciudad Vieja in the department of Sacatepéquez, the municipality of Escuintla and the municipality of Palin, both in the department of Escuintla in Guatemala, a few kilometers from the colonial city of Antigua Guatemala. It reaches an altitude of 3,766 m above sea level, and its last eruption dates back to the beginning of the Holocene period. On the slopes of the volcano there are coffee crops, higher up there are corn crops and near the top there is virgin forest. At the top you can find concentrations of water, in the concavity area of the crater, and telecommunications repeaters. The closest population to the summit is the town of Santa María de Jesús, where the road ends, and where the ascent generally begins. To reach the top there are paths.
Northwest Region: Famous for the Acatenango Volcano and the Fuego Volcano
The Fuego volcano is what is known as an active stratovolcano located between the departments of Sacatepéquez, Escuintla and Chimaltenango, in south-central Guatemala. The Fuego volcano is the most active volcano in Guatemala and Central America, and is also considered one of the most active in the world.2
Its eruptions are violent, and it is the most active volcano since the Conquest, to such an extent that it is claimed that the conquistador Pedro de Alvarado was able to see it erupt in the year 1524, as he himself reported in letters. Its indigenous name is Chi’gag, which would be translated from the Cachiquel language to Spanish as “where the fire is.”
The volcano has a height of 3763 m above sea level. It is practically uncovered from vegetation above 1300 meters, where basically only lava can be found.
Southwestern Region: Home of the Tajumulco Volcano, the highest in Central America
The Tajumulco Volcano is the highest volcano in Guatemala, with a height of 4,222 m above sea level, it is the highest point in Guatemala and in all of Central America. It is also the 24th most prominent volcano in the world.
It is considered extinct. It is located in the department of San Marcos, in the municipality of Tajumulco, in the west of the country. There are several historical reports of volcanic eruptions of the Tajumulco Volcano, but none have been confirmed to be true eruptions. The Tajumulco Volcano was declared a protected area in 1956, covering an area of 4,472 hectares.
The Tajumulco Volcano is considered, by people who like cold weather, one of the best places to climb and camp. The summit of the volcano and the camping area are located at about 4,220 m above sea level, you can also camp in an area specifically between the two peaks of the volcano, which forms a wind corridor.
